Hello little one! We are so happy that you are here! :) My colleague, Laura, has just had her baby and thanks to my ridiculously poor blogging efforts, I failed to post the gender reveal party cake that I made for her many months ago when we first found out the gender of her little baby. Here are the pictures from making the cake and the gender reveal party we had for her at work. Now that you know it’s a boy, it may not be quite as secretive and exciting, but I had the best time making this cake!
I can’t remember which Sweetapolita vanilla cake recipe I used because, let’s be serious, she’s the best, and they are all good. It may have been this one but I can’t be certain. I used my own buttercream recipe that I always use (2 sticks of butter room temp. + 1 lb. of confectioner’s sugar + 1 tsp. vanilla extract + low-med. speed on KitchenAid until it’s incorporated = easiest recipe ever) but unfortunately it yielded just barely enough to do the swirl technique and I was so nervous because of how little I had. I’ll stick to one of her frostings next time!
I used the swirl technique from Sweetapolita and used pink and blue (obviously!) and some purple to swirl. I then used pink M&Ms and blue decorative pearls from Williams-Sonoma to make the question mark. You could do this with any vanilla cake and dye the inside the color of the gender. I would then suggest using some white icing as a crumb coating so you don’t have to worry about the inside color of the cake showing through the icing. This cake was so much fun and was pretty easy to make. I highly recommend this technique. It gives the WOW factor, without having to break your back trying to make something beautiful. A beautiful cake for a beautiful woman who just had her precious little man! Love you, Laura!
